The Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green will be Star Trek: Discovery’s lieutenant commander.

WARNING: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR STAR TREK: DISCOVERY!

You probably know Alabama native Sonequa Martin-Green from her role as Sasha Williams on The Walking Dead. Martin-Green has been a regular on The Walking Dead since season three, and will continue appearing on AMC’s hit zombie apocalypse thriller, but now she also has an exciting science fiction role. Sonequa Martin-Green will be Star Trek: Discovery’s number one and lieutenant commander. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Star Trek: Discovery found it’s lead in Sonequa Martin-Green.

Star Trek: Discovery will break the Star Trek mold of focusing on the captain of a series and focus on the life of Discovery’s lieutenant commander. The show will of course still be an ensemble show focusing on the lives of the entire crew, but the lieutenant commander played by Martin-Green will have a special role in the story.

This of course implies that a very particular Star Trek story that hasn’t been explored on film yet will be the focus of Discovery. If this story is the focus of Star Trek: Discovery then the conflict on the ship isn’t going to be like any conflict we’ve seen in a previous Star Trek series.

The Star Trek: Discovery cast is filling out quickly now that we know who number one will be. We already know several Federation cast members and several Klingon cast members. Martin-Green is a good choice for Discovery because as a television veteran she will bring a lot of experience to the young cast.
