The fan film ‘Star Trek: First Frontier’ has released its first trailer on YouTube.

There are a lot of Star Trek fan films out there. All of these fan films are special in their own way because not only are they often great stories, but they represent the love fans have for Star Trek. Star Trek fan films are no small task, they take a lot of time, money, and commitment.

Star Trek: First Frontier might be something special even among Star Trek fan films however. Star Trek: First Frontier is a story about the very first captain of the Enterprise, Captain Robert April. We don’t know much about Robert April’s stint as captain of the Enterprise, so this is a great area of Star Trek canon to focus on for a fan film. This anchors the film in the Prime Timeline, but also gives the fan film plenty of room to work.

I’m not always the biggest fan of fan films set in this time frame. I know many Trekkies love Star Trek: Continues, but it’s jut not my cup of Earl Grey tea. I think this is because I don’t love seeing new fan versions of Kirk, Spock, and Bones. This story however will allow us to revisit that time in Star Trek history without worrying about stepping on the toes of established canon and the personalities of beloved characters like Spock, Kirk, and Bones.

Another exciting piece of

Star Trek: First Frontier

is that they have a full sized Enterprise to do effects in the same style as

Star Trek: The Original Series.

If a full eleven foot long Enterprise doesn’t get you excited I don’t know what will.
