Mom’s have played an important role in Star Trek and our lives, so let’s celebrate them with this list of Star Trek’s best moms!
ICYMI: Paramount has registered the title “Star Trek 4” with the Motion Picture Association of America.
There are some really impressive mom’s in Star Trek, but these are our favorites.
Amanda Grayson
Mother of Spock and wife to Sarek Amanda Grayson was one impressive woman. Amanda Grayson served as a reminder to Spock of his humanity, keeping him in touch with his human side. In the end that human/Vulcan mix is what made Spock more than the average Vulcan or man.
The most impressive thing about Grayson may have been the ease with which she was able to navigate Vulcan culture as well as human. While other humans seemed to have trouble understanding Vulcans it often appeared as though Grayson understood them better than they understood themselves.
Next: Beverly Crusher
Beverly Crusher
Beverly Crusher somehow manages to be the chief medical officer of the Federation flagship and the single parent to a boy genius who is constantly getting into mischievous jams.
It can be hard to stand out on a Star Trek show as the doctor, you’re often relegated to sickbay while most of the action takes place on the bridge, but Beverly Crusher does it. Crusher was a widowed mother to a boy genius and a brilliant scientists constantly finding cures for diseases and facing ethical crisis.
Whether you love or hate the Crusher clan you have to admit Beverly Crusher is an impressive mom… though I’m not sure about her letting her kid go away with a strange magician calling himself “the traveler.”
Beverly also got to slap Wesley Crusher, something many Star Trek fans have dreamed of doing.
Next: The Enterprise D
The Enterprise D
Did you know the Enterprise was a mommy? It sure was! In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Galaxy’s Child” the Enterprise itself becomes the adopted mother of a space whale that the crew names Junior.
The Enterprise was trying to peacefully study or communicate with Junior’s mother when she suddenly attacked. Her attack forced the Enterprise to respond and fire phasers. Sadly the phaser fire killed Junior’s mom and when the baby emerged it latched on to the ship as it’s new mother.
This of course leads to the crew spending the rest of the episode finding a way to get rid of Junior without hurting him or letting him drain all the ships energy. So does that make the ship the mother or Picard?
Next: Lwaxana Troi
Lwaxana Troi
You either love Lwaxana Troi episodes or you hate them, there is not real in-between.
Lwaxana Troi can be seen one of two ways, she’s either a crazy eccentric who is obsessed with romantic adventure, or she’s a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t a afraid to go after it. We prefer to think of her as the later.
Sur Lwaxana Troi can be a bit much, but that’s what makes her so much fun. In a Star Trek universe full of people acting properly Lwaxana is just out to be Lwaxana and she doesn’t care what you think.
If Deaanna was a little more like her mom it might not be such a bad thing.
Helena Rozhenko
Worf’s mom not only raised a Klingon on earth, but then raised his son Alexander after Worf went all bad dad and sent him away.
We don’t get to see a lot of Helena Rozhenko in Star Trek, but she has to make the list because SHE RAISED A KLINGON. Can you imagine what a teenage Klingon with all those hormones is like? Worf is already moody enough as an adult, teenage Worf would have been a huge pain in the butt.
Helena Rozhenko is truly an impressive mother.
Next: Ishka
Ishka
She’s the mother to Quark and Rom, the grandmother of Nog, and the confidant, lover, and secret financial advisor to the Grand Nagus.
Ishka has to be the most impressive woman in Ferengi history, she single handedly change the Ferengi Alliance forever not just for women, but for all Ferengi. Ishka broke barriers on female Ferengi wearing clothes, owning property, and being able to speak to males. Then she became the lover of the Grand Nagus and served as his secret financial advisor helping him run the entire Ferengi Alliance. Ishka was instrumental in changing the Nagus’ mind about Ferengi society and helping him push reform.
On top of all this Ishka manages to be one of the few people in the galaxy that can put Quark in his place. Have you called your Moogie today?
Next: K'Ehleyr
K’Ehleyr
She managed to stand up to Worf and refused to take the oath, she was a Federation ambassador, and she raised Alexander on her own for the first part of his life.
Some might criticize K’Ehleyr’s decision to keep Alexander from his father for the first part of his life, and it might not have been fair, but it also might have been the right call. Alexander and his father never shared a close relationship and Worf did end up sending him away to live with his parents back on earth.
K’Ehleyr was a Federation ambassador and a single mom of a Klingon, that’s pretty impressive.
Next: The Brog Queen
The Borg Queen
The Borg Queen is a mom of billions. Admittedly she’s not the best mom, but her attention is split and she’s doing the best she can. She has led her growing family to all kinds of success among the stars after all, that is until that meddling Janeway and Picard got in the way.
You may not love the tactics she uses, but the Borg Queen is one very successful mother.
Next: Keiko O'Brien
Keiko O’Brien
Raising kids in the stars is not an easy job, but Keiko O’Brien manages to do it because she is adaptable. Keiko is the botanist onboard the Enterprise, but when her husband Chief Miles O’Brien is transferred to Deep Space Nine she moves to the space station with him.
There’s not a lot of call for a botanist on DS9, but instead of giving up Kieko moves on and opens a school for the kids on the station. Keiko isn’t just a great mom to Molly, she’s a great teacher for all the kids on Ds9.
The scene where Worf delivers Keiko’s baby is also hilarious.
Next: Carol Marcus
Carol Marcus
There are a lot of strained family relationships in Star Trek, and the family of James T. Kirk is no exception. Carol Marcus raised Kirk’s son on her own, as she felt he wouldn’t be a good influence out exploring the galaxy. Whether Carol was right or wrong is up for debate, and it certainly strained Kirk’s relationship with his son, but either way Marcus raised her son on her own terms.
There are so many other great moms in Star Trek, like Data’s android mom and of course Winona Kirk, who was your favorite Star Trek mom? Let us know on Facebook or in the comments below and Happy Mother’s Day!
