All Star Trek fans have their opinion of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and while it certainly may not be the best of the franchise movies, it did earn over three times its budget and paved the way for the next installment, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And even if you’re one of those fans that absolutely hated the movie, there are still some really good scenes, like the one that showcases the friendship between Spock and Kirk. And that’s what the trailer below has captured without revealing too much of the movie’s essential plotlines.

Designed by Youtube creator Alex over eight years ago, the trailer starts with a voiceover from Spock (in Leonard Nimoy’s hypnotic voice that easily raises goosebumps) that is both poignant and compelling. With shots from the director’s cut of the DVD and Blu Ray, Alex expertly weaves in captivating moments from the movie with key pieces of dialogue from Admiral Kirk (like his address to the new crew) and the haunting strains of Sunshine by John Murphy which is music from the movie’s soundtrack.

There is one brief moment where the text and music combined comes across as a little jarring, but it doesn’t distract from the overall quality of the trailer. In a little over two minutes, Alex has wonderfully illustrated that Star Trek A Motion Picture is about so much more than just trying to stop an alien force from harming the world. It’s about finding meaning and purpose in life, about friendship and love, respect and dedication. And this trailer makes me want to rewatch the movie. It might even do the same for you.
