A fan combines William Shatner’s Common People and Star Trek

The English alternative rock band, Pulp, released the single “Common People” in May 1995. It has since then been voted the greatest Britpop song. William Shatner released an eclectic version of the song in 2004 with his own unique style. With an accompaniment by Joe Jackson, the song received positive reviews, and even Javis Cocker, the founder and front man of Pulp, liked Shatner’s version, saying “I was very flattered by that because I was a massive Star Trek fan as a kid and so you know, Captain Kirk is singing my song! So that was amazing.”

A Star Trek fan took things a step further and combined Shatner’s vocals and clips from Star Trek: The Original Series in a “Common People” video that does a fairly stellar job of matching the lyrics.

It had to have been a challenge to match 1995 lyrics with clips from a series set in the 1960s, but this fan found Captain Kirk’s words that fit perfectly with the Pulp song. The line “I wanna live like common people” is connected to Kirk’s evil doppelganger in “The Enemy Within” as he declares a desire to live. Of course, some of the lyrics make it easy to match with Captain Kirk’s penchant for the ladies.

Over 318,000 people have watched this video with most voting unanimously that it was simply perfect, with one fan even saying that it might be the greatest video ever. Have a watch and decide for yourself!
