8. “The Best of Both Worlds” – Star Trek: The Next Generation

It’s widely believed among the Star Trek fanbase that the Borg is among the scariest aliens in all of Trek. More so, they’re among the scariest aliens in all of science fiction. They’re unrelenting, ever-growing, and emotionless. They have no other function in this universe than to assimilate, destroy and repeat. Their quest to be perfect is unachievable but yet, they persist.

They take the innocent, they destroy the strong, and are generally just a walking embodiment of death. How do you make them scarier? You have them take the best among you, with ease, and turn him against his very own friends.

That’s what happened in the iconic two-parter Best of Both Worlds.

The Enterprise finds and confronts the Borg, who are able to steal away Captain Jean-Luc Picard. In doing so, they’re able to assimilate him and make him a Borg. The face of the Borg to be exact; Locutus. With the hopes of trying to assimilate as much of Earth as possible with as few casualties as possible, the Borg wanted to use Picard to entice the human race to surrender.

The capture, use of one of their own, and the sheer horror the Borg illicit are all you really need to see why this two-parter delivers the frights.
