Storytelling
Stargazers episode 1 allows readers complete access to Leon's life, including the conversations he has with his dog Alfie, the loving relationship he has with his parents, and his home life, as well as which of his relationships on board are strained or hostile.
Leon's interactions with Syrrik, the cadet who's moving on the fast track toward joining Starfleet Academy, practically vibrate with tension!
One thing I enjoyed about this opening chapter is that different types of language and manners of speaking feel authentic. His parents' speech is peppered with Spanish, like when Leon's mom calls him carino, lending a general backstory without having to lay out a ton of exposition. This keeps conversations rolling with familiar ease.
There's also plenty of onomatopoeia here, a comic book staple that has your brain making the sound instantly! I like the writer's choices, like "step," "jolt!" and "turn!" that give the storyline an element of action in the vertical panels that feature them and work seamlessly with the art style.
