There are a lot of strained family relationships in Star Trek, and the family of James T. Kirk is no exception. Carol Marcus raised Kirk’s son on her own, as she felt he wouldn’t be a good influence out exploring the galaxy.  Whether Carol was right or wrong is up for debate, and it certainly strained Kirk’s relationship with his son, but either way Marcus raised her son on her own terms.
