If you didn’t watch The West Wing, you may not know who Janel Moloney is at first glance (also, if you didn’t watch The West Wing, it’s on Netflix. Go. Watch. Enjoy). Moloney’s Donna Moss is the perfect example of a character having incredible growth over the course of a series. Donna starts off as deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman’s assistant. By the series finale, she is the Chief of Staff for the First Lady.

Moloney manages to be both endearing and inspiring, which is extremely difficult to do. As much as we love Captain Jean-Luc Picard, he’s a fantastic leader from the very beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation and his character didn’t have much room to grow. We see Janel Moloney’s captain as a captain who makes mistakes and learns as she goes – a captain we can relate to.

Not only that, but The West Wing had an outstanding cast and we might be lucky enough to see some alumni of the show in guest star roles on the new Star Trek series.
