It’s about a crew, not a captain
Chris Pine is fantastic in Star Trek Beyond as Captain James T. Kirk, but the movie is actually less captain centric than the previous Kelvin timeline films. Kirk still gets plenty of screen time and obviously the captain in a Star Trek series or film is always in the center of everything, but this time we get to see a lot more of the rest of the Enterprise’s crew.
The previous Kelvin timeline films kind of felt like Kirk and Spock adventures. Sure we got to see the whole crew, but most of the time they just hung out on the ship while Kirk and Spock went off and saved the day, Star Trek Beyond breaks that mold.
This is just another reason this feels more like a traditional Star Trek film, it’s about an entire crew.
