Iowa – Kate Mulgrew
Kate Mulgrew was a small town girl from Iowa who would go on to achieve great fame on television. After having some success on television, she had a major opportunity by being cast for Star Trek: Voyager. Mulgrew was able to land the starring role on the show of Captain Kathryn Janeway. This makes her the first female captain to lead a Star Trek series and she has been a fan favorite ever since.
Mulgrew’s acting talent is apparent. During her years on TV, Mulgrew has earned several awards and nominations. This includes winning an Obie Award, a Golden Satellite Award, and a Saturn Award. She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award as well as a Primetime Emmy Award. That would prove that her recognition for being an outstanding actor goes far beyond those in the Star Trek world.
It’s been several years since Mulgrew’s run as Captain Janeway on Voyager came to a close. However, she has been revitalizing her career with a new prominent TV role. Mulgrew plays the Russian felon Galina “Red” Reznikov on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. It’s drastically different from Captain Janeway, but Mulgrew plays it just as well.
