William Shatner ready to play Kirk again

William Shatner says he is ready to play Captain James T. Kirk again if he’s asked to do so in future Star Trek movies.

We might be getting more of the original Captain James T. Kirk if William Shatner has his way. Shatner told the Regina Leader-Post that he was open to putting Kirk’s makeup back on at the Fan Expo in Regina Canada.

"Although more than 20 years have passed, he still doesn’t consider himself officially retired from the role. He’d be willing to put on a starfleet uniform again, provided it was a meaningful return. “I’m perfectly fit and ready to put on some makeup …. The problem I guess is what do you do with an aging captain whose youthful existence is already there?,” said Shatner, now 86."

Obviously the return of Kirk would have to be meaningful and not just a random cameo without purpose to entice Shatner to return. Some of the ideas being thrown around in regards to Star Trek 4 though could offer the opportunity for something really special.

SPOILER WARNING: THE REST OF THIS POST SPECULATES ABOUT STAR TREK 4. SOME OF THESE THEORIES MAY SPOIL STAR TREK 4, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

We know that George Kirk is supposed to return in Star Trek 4. This means that some sort of time travel has to be involved. If you already have James and George Kirk side by side why not add in an older Kirk at some point?

Now we aren’t suggesting that an older Kirk would be fighting alongside his younger self and father, but he could appear in the movie in a meaningful way. If the idea is that the younger Kelvin Kirk and his father are working together to stop whoever split the timeline in the first place then there’s an opportunity. You could theoretically see an older Kirk in some sort of wrap up scene. Something showing that the Kelvin and Prime timelines are once again whole after Kelvin James and George battle whoever caused the rift in the first place.

This is of course all speculation, but it would be a really fun way to put a bow on the Kelvin timeline and wrap up the story. A bonus would be that it would be a more fitting end for Kirk than what we saw in Star Trek: Generations.
