First Star Trek: Discovery trailer review

After months of waiting, Trekkies have been treated to the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery. But was it worth the wait?

Like it or not, Star Trek: Discovery is here. It’ real. It’s canon. And it’s….just okay?

CBS has unveiled their ‘first look’ trailer for Star Trek: Discovery during the Upfront New York presentation earlier today. This two-minute trailer boasts some impressive visuals, decent score, and a half-dozen first looks.

I have watched the trailer 4 times now, and I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about it. RAD has continued its defense of the show for months now. We went against the usual Trekkie grain and gave the new series a fair shake. This was easy to do when we hadn’t seen anything concrete from the show…but now it seems like my faith was misplaced.

I created the above graphic to showcase my overall rating of the trailer. My feelings towards Star Trek: Discovery are a mixed bag right now. I want so desperately for a new Trek show, but not at the expense of quality content.

Granted, the first 3 seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation are tough to watch, and that is my favorite Trek series. So it is possible that Star Trek: Discovery might need a little time to help find its footing and start ‘banging on all cylinders’.

But the key question remains: will CBS give the show runners enough time to get into a good groove? Or will they cancel the show after poor ratings? Only time will tell.
