Jonathan Frakes is best known for playing Will Riker the second in command of the Enterprise D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Frakes however is also an accomplished director. Frakes has directed a number of Star Trek episodes and the film Star Trek: First Contact. Now it looks like Frakes is set to direct even more Star Trek.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Star Trek: Discovery producers Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg said the cast of Discovery was excited to work with the Trek veteran.
"“Jonathan Frakes will rejoin the Trek world with Discovery,” writer-producer Gretchen J. Berg told EW. “He’s a fantastic guy and great director.”Added fellow showrunner Aaron Harberts: “Our cast is dying to work with him.”"
This is exciting news for all Star Trek fans. Despite much of the Trek fanbase hanging on to skepticism about Discovery this is just more proof that the show is trying to reach out to Trekkies and stay connected to the roots of Star Trek.
There is perhaps no director, outside perhaps Nicholas Meyer (who is also working on Discovery) that has more of a history with Star Trek than Jonathan Frakes.
Frakes is a busy guy right now, he’s also directing an episode of Seth MacFarlane’s Star Trek spoof The Orville. If anyone is up to the challenge though it’s William Riker.
