Discovery showrunners talk canon, streaming, & season 2 hints
By Adam Sokol
Discovery showrunners, Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts sat down for an interview as part of a push for the upcoming Emmy’s. The For Your Consideration event featured the two talking about cementing canon going forward, the differences between airing on a streaming service as opposed to a network, and dropping hints at what to expect in season 2.
Something that, from what I’m hearing, is near and dear to a lot of fans hearts, is how Discovery fits in with canon. A topic that Harberts is excited about going forward. Saying that part of their goal in season 2 is to cement Discovery firmly in Trek canon. Citing questions they hope to answer such as “how is this possible? Micheal Burnham is the foster sister of Spock… How come they don’t know about the mycelial network in the other [Star Trek shows]?” I look forward to fan reactions towards the increased focus on canon. Though, they’re going to really have some explaining to do if they incorporate The Borg into any future seasons.
The two also talked about the differences between airing on a streaming service as opposed to a traditional network. Some of those differences are obvious, like the freedom to have the series’ first F-bomb. Others, less so. They talked about the importance of the binge-worthiness of Discovery. Harberts talked about the importance of adding layers to improve rewatching and binging over and over: “The fun part is to go back. You can now go look at the show and enjoy the story points you may have missed and really start to look at the craft, down to the detail.”

We were told towards the end of season one that we wouldn’t be seeing Spock in season 2. I’m pretty sure that was a fib.

We were told towards the end of season one that we wouldn’t be seeing Spock in season 2. I’m pretty sure that was a fib. Multiple hints have already been dropped that we’re going to see a young Spock soon. Season one ended with a shot of the Enterprise. Berg said of season 2 “You can see clues where we ended our last episode. That’s all set up, and we are going to be paying off all the stuff that you saw. And the people that maybe were brought to mind, you may be seeing some of those folks too.” Also, Sonequa Martin-Green all but confirmed that in an earlier interview. That, coupled with the fact that family is going to be an overarching theme of season 2. They have not announced a Spock actor as of yet.
One thing that I’m hoping for in season two is to let the characters breath a little bit more. I would love to see a handful of bottle episodes. Advancing the overarching plot is important, but I like these characters. For the most part, at least. I really look forward to getting to know them better.
