Official: Michelle Yeoh to star in Star Trek: Section 31 series

CBS All Access has announced that a Star Trek television series focused on Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh is officially in development.

After months of rumors and speculation, on Monday CBS All Access made it official. Star Trek: Discovery is getting its first spinoff. Michelle Yeoh will be starring in a new live-action television series focused on Section 31, the shadowy black ops group of the Star Trek Universe.

Yeoh will once again be playing former Terran Emperor Georgiou, the Mirror Universe counterpart of Captain Phillipa Georgiou who was killed in the second episode of Discovery. In a bonus scene from that first season, we can see Georgiou being recruited into Section 31 and it’s well known that the character is also set to appear in Discovery Season 2.

First seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Section 31 is an organization that makes its own rules and doesn’t follow the protocols put forth by Starfleet. As a result that can go anywhere and pretty much do whatever they want in the name of preserving the Federation.

Star Trek: Section 31 (which is what we’ll be calling it instead of “The Untitled Star Trek series about Section 31”) will be co-executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Bo Yeon Kim, and Erika Lippoldt will be writing the series as well as serving as showrunners.

In a statement announcing the new series, Kurtzman praised Yeoh for what she brought to the role as well as the creative team he has assembled to bring the series to life.

"“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of ‘Star Trek,’ and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”"

For her part, Yeoh sounds incredibly anxious to return to Star Trek full-time and continue playing this character.

"“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”"

Star Trek: Section 31 is the latest in a string of Trek announcements over the last few weeks. In addition to the highly-anticipated second season of Discovery, Kurtzman and company have announced a second animated series joining Star Trek: Lower Decks, the first story details of Star Trek: Picard and that more Star Trek: Short Treks are on the way.
