We all know Picard needs his empath… No, not Famke Jenssen, though I’m sure he wouldn’t mind her visiting during the run of the new series, I’m talking about Deanna Troi, if we see Jonathan Frakes Captain Riker and the USS Titan, it’s pretty certain we will also see his wife aboard, but even if we don’t see Jonathan Frakes reprise his role it’s still highly likely that going into any negotiation where Picard needs an advantage he might just reach out to his trusted advisor Deanna Troi.

Many fans have complained over the years that Troi’s entire role on Star Trek The Next Generation was to sit on the bridge, a place her position of ships councillor doesn’t seem to fit, and to introduce the viewer to a wide variety of chocolate. But the truth is her ability to detect emotion, see through lies and provide an extra-sensory perception into just about anyone Picard encounters in a value that can’t be overstated.

Assuming Jean-Luc is on the front lines of the Romulan collapse in some capacity there’s every reason to believe that he will at some point need access to this sixth sense at some point.
