Commander Tomalak appeared in only four episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation but somehow always seemed to cast a larger shadow as one of the rare Romulan’s we kind of got to know during the run of the series, and yet one of his appearances was actually only as a hologram created by someone who had never met him, while another was in an alternate future that may never happen.

But as one of the apparent key players along the Romulan Neutral Zone, and point people when it came to dealing with the United Federation of Planets, it seems to be a safe bet that Tomalak would be once again on the front lines when it comes to dealing with the Federation in the aftermath of the fall of the Romulan Star Empire.

Additionally Tomalak is one of the few characters who could easily be written as a Romulan Counterpoint to Jean-Luc Picard, in that he was once on the front lines ready for a fight, prepared for peace and now stands on the verge of exactly that breakthrough, it would be a very fitting follow-up for the character to see how his life has been altered by the same events that have altered Picard’s, just from the other side. Seeing a Romulan somewhat redeemed in this way would work well with the type of show Star Trek Picard seems ready to be.
