The newly created distribution arm of Shout! Factory, Shout! Studios has acquired the world-wide distribution rights to the crowd funded Star Trek Deep Space Nine Documentary What We Left Behind: A Look Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Redshirts Always Die has been covering the upcoming Star Trek Deep Space Nine Documentary for over Two years now, going all the way back to its first announcement and right through the massive crowdfunding effort, and every step in between, and we’ve even spent some time musing about the possibility of it leading to the long-awaited HD release of the series, but now we’re closer than ever to getting to finally see What We Left Behind: A Look Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

For those unfamiliar with the upcoming documentary, it’s directed by Deep Space Nine Showrunner Ira Steven Behr and David Zappone, the man behind For the Love of Spock. It will serve as an in-depth look back on the series with most of the original cast assembled for interviews and reminiscing about the series, however it will be going one step further than most documentaries, as they have also reassembled the original writers room to look at what they would have done had the series continued for an historic eighth season.

"“Deep Space Nine has a passionate fanbase—as shown by the successful crowdfunding campaign that brought this movie to life—and we’re thrilled share their love of and dedication to the show by bringing the What We Left Behind to an even wider audience,”Michael Ribas, VP Marketing at Shout! Studios."

No Star Trek series has yet passed the seven season mark, though each of the series to have made it to seven seasons have ended their run of their own accord, it is interesting for fans to discover how the series would have continued if the writers room had their way. We can safely assume we would have seen a lot of fallout from the war, and no doubt they wouldn’t have been as quick to wrap up all of the character arcs for their secondary cast and recurring characters had they thought they would go into an eighth season.

We’ll finally get our answers as to what the 8th season would have been, Shout! Studios intends to release the documentary across several platforms before the end of the year, this will include a theatrical release, however no word yet on how wide a release we will see.
