Star Trek Voyager Flashback Tuvok, Janeway and Sulu

Hikaru Sulu

  • Star Trek
  • Star Trek The Animated Series
  • Star Trek Voyager
  • Star Trek (Kelvin Timeline)

The helmsmen of the original Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu was originally played by George Takei from The Original Series through The Animated Series and for the subsequent six movies featuring the original cast, when the Kelvin Timeline was launched the role was recast with John Cho taking on the iconic character.

George Takei had been lobbying for the character to appear more well defined for several years, as a part of that campaign he was promoted to Captain of the USS Excelsior during the movies, however when he began pushing for Sulu to have a family when he was approached to reprise his role in Generations the producers instead opted to give him a daughter and pass all of his lines on to her.

As one of the few characters who didn’t appear in the Original Series episode The Trouble with Tribbles, Sulu couldn’t appear in the Deep Space Nine followup Trials and Tribble-ations, however, he was able to appear in the Voyager episode Flashback to help celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the franchise.

When the Kelvin Timeline came around in 2009 the role was recast with John Cho taking George Takei’s place at the helm and in Sulu’s skin, though he would appear in Beyond along with the rest of the original cast in an archive photo. Though Takei was unsuccessful in garnering the whole family he had originally wanted for Sulu the character was finally given that family in Into Darkness.
