It looks like Sonequa Martin-Green will be leaving the Discovery bridge for a spell to hang out with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and LeBron James.

Way back in 1996, the greatest basketball player of all time boldly went where no athlete had gone before. Namely, into the world of the Loony Tunes to help Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and their friends save their world from invading aliens by playing basketball.

And if you think that sounds like an awesome time at the movies, you would be correct.

The original Space Jam went on to earn $230 million worldwide and made Michael Jordan an even bigger star than he already was. You know, if that was even possible. And now, two decades later, Warner Bros. is going to see if lightning can strike twice.

This time Space Jam 2 will star LeBron James and will feature him joining forces with the Loony Tunes in a basketball game that is sure to be way more entertaining than watching James play with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yes, I went there.

So what does this matter to Star Trek fans? Well, it is being reported by Variety that Sonequa Martin-Green of Star Trek: Discovery fame is in talks to join the cast. She will be playing James’ wife in the film and will be the “bedrock” of the family.

And if there isn’t at least one Star Trek joke somewhere in this movie, I will walk out of the theater shaking my head.

Space Jam 2 is set to film this summer during the NBA offseason and it shouldn’t conflict with Martin-Green’s commitment to Discovery Season 3. So Trek Nation can relax and exhale. We all know Discovery wouldn’t be the same without our favorite mutineer Michael Burnham.

Space Jam 2 will be directed by Terence Nance with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) producing in addition to James and his SpringHill Entertainment partner Maverick Carter. It is set to arrive in theaters everywhere on July 16, 2021.
