Quentin Tarantino confirms his Star Trek will be R-rated

In a new interview, director Quentin Tarantino gave an update on his Star Trek project, including the fact that it will indeed be rated R.

Every time director Quentin Tarantino open his mouth, it seems like we get closer and closer to a Star Trek project with him at the helm actually happening.

The last time Tarantino talked about his long-gestating Star Trek project was in April while promoting the Netflix release of The Hateful Eight. It was then that he revealed a script has been completed by Mark L. Smith and that when he was finished working on his new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood he would then give it a look.

Of course, given the incredibly long gaps between news about a Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek feature film, you could be forgiven if you thought that would be all we’d hear for the duration of the summer.

Turns out that isn’t the case at all.

This time it is while Tarantino was talking to Empire Magazine (on newsstands this week) about Once Upon A Time In Hollywood that the subject of his Star Trek movie came up. And while the news isn’t exactly groundbreaking, it is a sign that things are starting to pick up some momentum.

Tarantino once again confirmed that the script is done and that with Once Upon A Time In Hollywood now finished, he’s ready to dive into the script and make it his own.

"There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet."

In addition, Tarantino finally confirmed something that has long been suspected about any Star Trek movie he might choose to work on.

"Oh yeah! It’s an R-rated move. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated."

How exactly an R-rated Star Trek film would work is anyone’s guess. Little is known about the concept Tarantino has for the film other than that Karl Urban, who played McCoy in the Kelvin Timeline films, called it “bananas.”

Right now it isn’t even known if the movie would take place in the Prime or Kelvin Timeline, which cast members of what shows would be involved or if it would be something entirely new.

Considering how talented Tarantino is and how long the idea of him directing a Star Trek film has been floating around, I think I speak for all of Trek Nation when I say “who cares?” The world needs this to happen.
