Captain Benjamin Sisko broke many a Starfleet rule and law during his time of DS9’s commanding officer but the Star Trek fans don’t really mind.

It’s hard to argue that the fans are wrong, as Captain Benjamin Sisko did everything he could to make sure his friends, family, and crew were safe during one of the most tumultuous periods of the Federation. So when the question was asked, it wasn’t that surprising that 84% of fans were totally ok with Sisko’s less than desirable maneuvers.

Sisko had a laundry list of crimes and indiscretions to his name during his time on Deep Space 9 but it’s hard to argue that most, if not all of his actions, weren’t justified. While you want a Starfleet Captain to be more morally just in his actions, the facts are that sometimes the brash and brutish way gets the best results.

It’s like that old tired adage; “violence doesn’t solve anything”. Well, it solved World Wars, so I don’t think that’s true at all. Sure you don’t want your Starfleet officer to gas a planet full of innocent people but if you need to do it, you’d rather it be done by someone who understands the weight of the situation.

That’s something that Sisko showed maybe more than anyone, the understanding of the weight of his actions. He wasn’t naive to think he was a morally pure man, just that he was morally justified. Sometimes those are the same things, sometimes they’re not. That’s why Sisko is so beloved because he reminded the audience of that.

Just a heads up for next week, in order to have more content scheduled throughout the week, voting will now end on Thursday mornings for these Friday Night Fights. That way Thurs-Sun there are guaranteed daily columns, and I’m only stuck trying to fill Mon-Wed with ideas. Stay tuned later today for the next Friday Night Fight selection.
