If you’re looking for the perfect getaway, Star Trek has you covered.
We’re all feeling a little cooped up now, only venturing out for the necessities of life. What we’d really like it a chance to pack our bags and get away, especially to some faraway planet where there is no pandemic. We know it’s a fantasy, but if we’ll take it over reality right now. And Star Trek provided us with some planets that are worth the time and money it would take to get there. And even NASA scientists agree with some of these destination spots!
Sigma Iotia II
Originally, this planet wouldn’t be one you’d want to get anywhere near. Still stuck in the 1920s, the inhabitants, the Iotians, were fighting gang wars with Tommy guns, and they weren’t adverse to killing and kidnapping. But Captain Kirk, Spock, and Bones really helped whip this planet into shape, and now, it might be a fun adventure to spend a little time back in the Roaring Twenties. There could still be remnants of its violent past so keep an eye out when you’re heading to the speakeasy.
Spending just a few days on this perfect planet would erase wrinkles, restore vitality, and make you feel twenty years younger. No, it won’t last once you return home, but for as long as you choose to visit, you’ll feel like a million bucks, and certain body parts might feel a bit perkier, at least according to Counselor Troi and Dr. Crusher. There isn’t a lot of technology there so your cell phone likely won’t work. But there is plenty to do if you like hiking, relaxing with a good book, and spending some time in the sun. Though the residents will treat you well, they aren’t particularly fond of visitors so don’t overstay your welcome.
Omicron Ceti III
If you’re feeling particularly stressed out, this planet, introduced in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “This Side of Paradise,” is just what you need. With a quick sniff of one of the plants, you’ll lose all worries. If it can strip away a Vulcan’s logic, there’s little doubt it can provide you with some much-needed contentment. You might want to bring a friend who isn’t afraid to push you around once it’s time to go home. Anger is the only way to break the spell of those spores, but you’ll find peace for a little while, at least.
You can’t be surprised this one is on the list. Look at all the fun Captain Picard had when he was wrangled into a vacation by the crew of the Enterprise. It didn’t take him long to get into the swing of things once he’d arrived. Is there any wonder? A planet dedicated solely to pleasure? Yes, please. Admittedly, there could be a downfall or two in spite of the tropical beaches and perfect weather, i.e. Star Trek: Voyager episode “Fury.” And Captain PIcard did have to deal with a wayward Ferengi and some Vorgons who weren’t what they seemed. But if you’re up for a little adventure, this might not be a deterrent.
One wouldn’t necessarily see this as a vacation spot, but for those of you who like hiking and sightseeing, it has deserts, ancient ruins, active volcanoes, and even some lava fields. It doesn’t have any moons, though, so forget about a moonlight stroll with your significant other. It also has wilderness preserves and plenty of options for spiritual retreat and restoration. The temperature can get a little high so pack accordingly. Technically, this isn’t a tourist spot, but you can get away with a few days, especially if you know a Vulcan or know someone who knows a Vulcan.
While there are several more planets in the Star Trek Universe that are worth a visit, these five have a little something for all types of vacationers. Now, don’t you wish you could really go?
