The remake of Dune has been widely expected among members of the science fiction fandom for some time and this new trailer may just deliver.
Dune will premiere in 2020, with a star-studded cast to back it. Names like Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Jason Mamoa, and so many others are injected into this film to give it a very real presence. The film will not see a major name as the leading character, that honor will go Timothee Chalamet, who will play the main character Paul Atreides.
The plot is pretty simple, Paul Atreides’ father takes control of a dangerous planet, which is the only known source of an element dubbed ‘the spice’. A powerful element that has incredible effects on man and machine. Betrayal, scandal, and war propel the plot forward and with an all-star cast, it may be the best screen-version of Dune ever.
Originally a novel released in 1965, Dune as a franchise has been long and well-loved. While not on the level of Star Trek or Star Wars, Dune may classify more as a cult-franchise these days but a still very beloved one at that. Thankfully by the looks of the trailer the folks at WB have put a lot of effort into this project and made sure to flush out the main cast with super-talented stars ranging from Brolin to up-and-comer Zendaya.
The trailer even features a brand new version of Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse”, this time with Hans Zimmer taking control of things. A fitting song to touch off a unique looking film.
This is expected to be part one of a two-part series, not to mention a television series expected to be on HBO Max.
This will be the third attempt to bring Dune to screens. The first was in 1984 and despite a whos-who including Patrick Stewart, musician Sting, Kyle MacLachlan, Max von Sydow, and Dean Stockwell, the film was a flop. It wasn’t just a miss with critics, but fans of the series also were disappointed with it. On top of that, the film failed to make back its money. An easier feat to do in the 80s, with fewer options available to compete against.
The book was also made into a television mini-series for SyFy when it was called Sci-Fi, called Frank Herbert’s Dune, and a followup series called Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune. Both series did well enough for the time and even featured a young James McAvoy.
