Kate Mulgrew is returning to Star Trek as Kathryn Janeway on the upcoming Nickelodeon animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy.
Too bad Star Trek: Voyager‘s theme wasn’t “Shape of the Heart” because it’s been a long road, getting from there to here. At least that’s what we could say about Kate Mulgrew’s return to the Star Trek franchise as Kathryn Janeway. The former star of Voyager will return to her role as Janeway for the CGI animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, set to debut next year on Nickelodeon.
Mulgrew was very excited about this, speaking to viewers watching the New York Comic-Con virtual panel, where she talked about how much of her was in the Janeway character.
"I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me."
We still don’t know what her role is going to be in Prodigy with regard to scope. Is this a cameo move or perhaps a support role? It seems unlikely she’d have a starring role considering the show is about “lawless teens”, but who knows? She’s the first member of the cast to be announced so far.
For some, this announcement may come as a bit of a letdown, especially when so many people were asking her if she would like to reprise the Janeway in her own version of Star Trek: Picard. Something she was apparently game for. With her getting put into the Prodigy series, it doesn’t appear very likely that she’d reprise her role in a solo series, similar to how Patrick Stewart did in Picard.
That’s ok though, as many fans just wanted to see Mulgrew back in the saddle again, something Prodigy will be able to give her.
