If you ever wanted Star Trek to be embraced by punk music, you have finally gotten your wish with the debut album from Boldly Go!

Punk music, kinda like Star Trek, is an admitted acquired taste, but golly, it’s one that this writer absolutely loves. The problem with punk music is that it’s really not an open and inviting genre. Its counter-culture mindset is what drives it. So when you see a punk band get to the mainstream, they’re few and far between. Usually, they need a hook to bridge the gap. There’s no better bridge to a broader audience than embracing an entire fanbase. That’s what the punk band Boldy Go! has done.

From Charleston, WV, the band formed in 2019 and signed with Coffin Curse Records, a smaller record label that seemingly has signed smaller, lesser-known bands with alternative styles. A platform perfect for Boldy Go!

The band has a classic mid-’90s style that became very popular with the rise of skateboard culture, which is fitting since most modern Star Trek fans got into the series around the same time.

Every song on their premiere album is named after something Star Trek related. There are songs about falling in love with Qo’nos, a song about Khan and even a subtle shoutout to the iconic Star Trek parody film, Galaxy Quest with their track Never Give Up (Never Surrender). Here’s the full tracklisting.

  1. Fell in Love on Qo’NoS
  2. Andorian Girl
  3. Trekkie Punx
  4. First Contact
  5. Phasers on Kill
  6. Way Down Below
  7. No Win Scenarios
  8. Never Give Up (Never Surrender)
  9. Nightmare (Twist of Khan)
  10. Starfleet Out

This isn’t the first band to specialize in a medium like this. The favorite cult band The Megas have been doing music based on The Mega Man franchise for years, as well as adapting several songs from the Castlevania franchise as well.

Boldly Go!’s first album, United Federation of Punx is now out on CD, vinyl, tapes, and digital means; which you can listen to below for free, courtesy of Bandcamp.
