Love him or hate him, the Star Trek Universe doesn’t seem to be done with Q

Thirty-three years has passed since Q first interacted with Captain Picard aboard the Enterprise, but the often irritating, arrogant entity obviously isn’t done with the universe yet. John de Lancie, the actor behind the brash Q from the Continuum, has already voiced an appearance as Q on Lower Decks, but, in a recent cameo to a fan, de Lancie dropped a hint that might mean he’s going to be popping in again.

A father had purchased this cameo as a Christmas gift for his son, and in it, John de Lancie talks about how Gene Roddenberry warned him that he didn’t know what he’d gotten himself into when he took the part. Presumably, this means de Lancie had no idea how his life was going to change with the undertaking of the role. And did it ever.

Q has been a polarizing villain since his initial appearance on Encounter at Far Point on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He moves people around like pawns on a chess board, pops in where he’s least wanted, and basically gets his own way most of the time. Still, many Star Trek fans adore the character. So it isn’t surprising that he returned to the universe in the Lower Decks’ episode “Veritas.”

But that might not be the last time Q makes an appearance as he also told the fan “Oh and by the way, here is a little stocking stuffer… You are going to be seeing more of me.” Now, he could mean he’ll be voicing Q again, but, of course, there’s speculation that he actually meant we’ll be seeing him onscreen. The only problem with that is: isn’t he supposed to be immortal? If that’s the case, he shouldn’t be aging. But, of course, there are always workarounds as Q often appeared in a number of disguises.

It remains to be seen whether de Lancie meant fans would literally be “seeing” him again or if he meant Q will be returning in some form, which could mean a return to Lower Decks or even an appearance in the upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy. It would be a shame, though, if Admiral Picard didn’t have at least one last interaction with Q.

dark. Next. Some of the Next Generation Star Trek films needed a character like Q
