Whoopi Goldberg played Guinan on Star Trek: The Next Generation and the veteran actress is looking forward to possibly return to that universe.

Star Trek: Picard is set to start filming its second season on Feb. 1, and the returns and guest spots are being kept very close to the vest to not give everything away. While the first season ended with some wonky storytelling, like Picard getting a synthetic body that ages and dies, that was dumb, the show was generally received positively and many fans were left speculating who would return to the universe for season two. One of those names fans are hoping for is Whoopi Goldberg, who played Guinan on The Next Generation series.

The topic isn’t just being discussed among fans but with Goldberg herself. Speaking to SFX Magazine, Goldberg revealed that she wants to return to Star Trek.

"No, I haven’t seen [Discovery] – but I did watch the first season of Picard, which was great. From time to time, I talk to Patrick [Stewart] about Star Trek. Hopefully, I will be joining their cast for a little while next year. I’m very excited about that."

Goldberg, who’s more famous these days for hosting The View, last appeared in a Star Trek property in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations. Despite her lack of large acting roles these days, she’s got many fans, including the showrunner for Star Trek: Picard, Michael Chabon.

Chabon loves the idea of Goldberg possibly returning to the franchise. Telling the Hollywood Reporter that he’s been watching her scenes with Picard from the Next Generation and he seems absolutely taken by their chemistry. He loves it so much, he wants to write scenes for the two.

"I’ve gone back to rewatch some of the more key Guinan episodes from Next Gen, the major Picard and Guinan moments. She’s such an amazing actor; I can’t wait."

Clearly bringing back Goldberg to Star Trek would make sense in the context of Star Trek: Picard, after all, she was a huge confidant for the Captain, and to see her and Picard have even just one more scene together would be a perfect way to explore how their relationship has changed in the years since their series ended.
