A new take on the “trapped in the same day” film trope is on its way in Boss Level, a science fiction movie about a man who can’t escape the same day.

Boss Level is an upcoming science fiction action film directed by Joe Carnahan and written by Carnahan and brothers Chris and Eddie Borey. The film stars Frank Grillo (Captain America franchise, Purge franchise, Warrior) as Roy Pulver, a retired special forces soldier, stuck in the same day, doomed to repeat it forever. A day that ends each day in him getting killed by various hitmen.

The loop he’s stuck in is due to a “sinister program”.

Of course, Pulver has to fight his way through each day in far more elaborate, over the top and violent means. It takes the Groundhog Day approach and adds a bloody, science fiction twist to a fun, if not somewhat tired idea.

Perhaps the best version of this format was from Supernatural’s third season, with the 11th episode “Mystery Spot”. In it, Sam Winchester has to watch his brother die time and time again, only to wake up and have to witness his brother’s death time and time again. In the episode, the deaths become more and more outlandish, being played for laughs. Essentially turning Dean, Sam’s brother, into a live-action Looney Tune character.

Since the actual Groundhog Day film, that episode of Supernatural may have been the next best loop-movie, though Palm Springs got rave reviews as well.

Boss Level could be the film that really hits differently with the idea, and if done right, could be a really fun film.

It also stars a robust cast. Embattled star Mel Gibson plays the main villain, with Naomi Watts, Michelle Yeo, Will Sasso, Anabelle Wallis, Ken Jeong, Mathilde Ollivier, Selina Lo, and Meadow Williams also apart of the cast. Joining a stacked lineup of actors, however, are three championship athletes in former Super Bowl winner Rob Gronkowski and former world champion of the MMA world Rashard Evans and Quintin “Rampage” Jackson.

This looks to be one heck of an action flick.
