When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended, almost everyone had a story wrap-up or a sensible ending. Captain Sisko went with the Prophets, Odo returned to his people, Worf left to become Ambassador of the United Federation of Planets to the Klingon Empire. and Chief O’Brien left to teach at Starfleet. Meanwhile, Colonel Kira took command of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Quark continued to run his bar, and both Ezri Dax and Dr. Bashir remained on DS9 with a new relationship. But one character’s story remained open-ended, Garak.

Garak had been an exile of Cardassia the entirety of the series, but he still had a great love for his home world. After the Cardassians got thoroughly trounced because of their team-up with the Dominion and Gul Dukat was no longer a threat, Garak chose, at the end of DS9, to remain in Cardasssia with the unspoken intentions of restoring it. This essentially left his story open because we don’t know if he succeeded. Was Cardassia rebuilt? Did Garak become its leader, and did the citizens follow him? Was there continued civil unrest among his people?

Just as we didn’t know a lot about Garak during his time on Deep Space Nine, we don’t get to know much about the remainder of his life. And some fans think a series with him trying to rebuild Cardassia would have the action and drama needed to sustain another Star Trek show that isn’t set aboard a starship. And with his history as a member of the Obsidian Order, we could certainly add intrigue into the mix.

What do you think? Would Star Trek fans be interested in watching a series set on Cardassia with Garak at the helm? Or do you think there isn’t enough in his future to sustain such a series?
