With it being Valentine’s Day, Star Trek’s official website decided to rank the top romantic moments in Star Trek history. A list that’s actually competitive considering we’re talking about Star Trek. That’s not to say that Trek doesn’t bring the romance from time to time, merely just saying that Trek isn’t known for its romantic sub-plots.

Sure you have Deanna Troi and Will Riker but Star Trek isn’t a CW show. There’s very rarely the Hallmark ending. Star Trek worries more about stories than it does relationships.

Yet, if you look, there can be some really, truly genuine romantic moments. Star Trek.com has the entire list, including my personal favorite at No. 3 but the top pick is hard to argue with. As Jennifer Boudinot of Star Trek.com writes, the romance between Captain Pike and Vina may just have the most romantic in the show.

"A romance so epic it spans two different Trek series, the love story of Captain Pike and Vina of Talos IV was originally created by Gene Roddenberry himself for the pilot of The Original Series….The story is this: Horribly injured in an accident, Vina was put together by the aliens of Talos IV incorrectly, meaning that her beauty is only as deep as the illusions that flourish on the planet. Captain Pike is her dream man, who the aliens bring to Talos IV hoping he’ll stay. When he doesn’t, they make an illusion of him, which keeps Vina company until he’s injured himself (rescuing children, naturally) and Spock brings him back to stay….the beauty of sci-fi romance is that it doesn’t have to be ordinary."

Though the thing that’s glossed over is the tragedy of the moment. It’s more of a Romeo and Juliet romance, where something awful befalls both lovers than a cute and quirky You Got Mail or Love Actually story.

There’s something beautiful in the way they find each other at the end of the story, despite having their own limitations and issues. That doesn’t mean that their lives will be easier with one another, after all, they both have hardships still to face, but that’s part of what makes it so romantic; facing those hardships with one another.

Often times there’s a lot of reasons to disagree with these types of lists and maybe you still do, but even though I’m a huge Voyager fan, even I think this deserves to be the number one pick.

Next. Rumor: Scott Bakula is returning as Captain Archer. dark
