Star Trek: Prodigy will feature a cast of characters who find an old Starfleet ship, fix it up and claim it as their own. It’s an interesting idea for the group of young characters to essentially find an abandoned vessel but how did it end up in a place where it was in a position to be nabbed by the untrained?

That’s an interesting question, one that hopefully Prodigy will look into with some serious detail, to further expand on the story they’re telling. Yet, one has to wonder if Starfleet even has a protocol for disposing of old ships.

After all, it’s such an interesting concept; what happens to a spaceship when it’s accomplished all it can and it’s being moved out to pasture. In real life, some are on display at the Smithsonian, while others are tourist attractions across the world.

In the series Battlestar Galactica, the ship Galactica is going to be stripped down and made into a museum for people to tour.

So what about Starfleet, what happens to one of their ships when it becomes decommissioned? Well, thankfully, Certifiably Ingame has decided to tackle that question.

With the debut of Prodigy coming sometime this year, it’s good to understand how these ships can be forgotten about and allowed to fall into the hands of kids.

As pointed out in the video, some become flagships for Admirals, while others become training ships for academy students. While Prodigy won’t be a show about Starfleet cadets, this could be one way the ship falls into their hands, with a group of cadets bailing on the ship.

Another way the show could kick-off is the main characters discovering the Starfleet ship graveyard, a place where old ships that have been stripped down of their usable components are sent, as Starfleet waits to rip apart the entire vessel to reuse the materials as scrap in new ships.

That could be another way to bring about the start of the show.

This is all just speculation. Hopefully, we’ll get more information about the show in the coming weeks, including but not limited to, the full voice cast.
