Bortus and Klyden haven’t had the sturdiest of relationships since The Orville began. As Moclans, they come from a society that is supposedly all male. (Supposedly as later, over 6,000 female Moclans are found living on a separate planet.) Moclan men adhere to the belief that women aren’t as good as men so if a female child is born, that baby undergoes sex reassignment surgery to become a male. That is what happened with Bortus and Klyden’s baby, Topa. In addition, the men on Moclus cannot be attracted to or be with a woman. To do so risks imprisonment or worse.

Klyden is more adherent to the laws and beliefs of Moclus with Bortus more accepting of other cultures. That is driven a wedge in between the two and has caused quite a bit of problems in their marriage, especially when it comes to Topa. Klyden has taught him that women are inferior. But this isn’t the only issue where Bortus has disagreed with Klyden. Bortus’ ex-boyfriend was attracted to females, and Klyden essentially forced the man to choose between telling the truth himself or being outed.

Klyden is demanding and often petulant when Bortus can’t spend enough time with him. And he wants his own way. This seems to be his standard operating procedure as he doesn’t like living aboard The Orville and stays mostly in their living quarters, preferring not to associate with other people.

That’s not to say that Bortus doesn’t have his issues, but he fits in with the crew of The Orville and seems happy there…except for his home life which is anything but pleasant. Occasionally, the couple will have a good time together, but, for the most part, they are cordial to one another rather than affectionate. In fact, they seem to be more acquaintances than mates. So fans are speculating that it’s only a matter of time before their marriage dissolves.

Personally, I’d like to see Bortus happy, and I don’t think he is right now. He needs someone who understands life aboard a ship and Bortus’ job but also someone he wants to spend time with and love. I don’t think that’s Klyden.
