Though it hasn’t been talked about much, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy from The Original Series had a daughter. She was officially introduced to Star Trek when she was mentioned in The Animated Series episode, “The Survivor.” But we never saw her. DeForest Kelly and D.C. Fontana had created the backstory for Bones which included his estranged daughter who was originally going to appear in The Way to Eden, but, for reasons unknown, that was changed to be Chekov’s ex-girlfriend. Joanna does finally make an appearance in the 1986 novel, Crisis on Centaurus by Brad Ferguson.

Now, Inverse is suggesting that Joanna could make an appearance on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as rumors abound about “old” Star Trek characters returning. And since SNW is set before The Original Series, this doesn’t sound like an impossibility. The character’s estrangement from Dr. McCoy would enable her to appear on the series without Dr. McCoy himself, although it would be disappointing not to see the newest incarnation of Bones.

Other characters have popped up on Star Trek that had never even been mentioned previously, (Hello, Sybok) but at least Joanna would have a direct tie to the franchise. Although, she would technically still be a child at the beginning of SNW, there is a way around that, as Inverse provides. So it would be interesting to see a descendant of Bones McCoy’s even if we don’t get to the see the doctor.

It does make you wonder, though, how her character would be introduced into the series. Maybe it will be a one-shot appearance. Or maybe Joanna won’t be in the show at all, but I, for one, would love to see some characters that harken back to the first series besides only Spock. With Strange New Worlds set only a few years before Captain Kirk took command of the Enterprise, it only seems reasonable that we would see characters from that world as well.
