First Contact Day has brought a lot of information for Star Trek fans, especially those looking forward to the upcoming animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy. The news that Kate Mulgrew was reprising her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway had Star Trek: Voyager fans excited and looking forward to seeing the franchise’s first female captain immortalized in animation. Today, we weren’t disappointed with today’s reveal from Paramount+.

Complete with her familiar cup of coffee, Captain Janeway is dressed in the Voyager uniform with her hair similar to the style she wore in the first season. In the animated kids’ series, Janeway will serve as the STAR TREK: PRODIGY starship’s built in emergency training hologram.

Her mission will be to help a crew of young aliens as they figure out how to work together while navigating a ship they have taken in 2383, after the events of Voyager. The six young crewmembers traverse the galaxy in the Delta Quadrant while looking for a better future, and, of course, they’re going to need help. And who better to help the outcasts than the woman who has been there and done that, especially in the Delta Quadrant? She’ll not only be able to help them learn the ship, but she’ll introduce them to Starfleet and its values.

The CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first “Star Trek” series aimed at younger audiences and is set to debut on Paramount+ later this year according to the announcement from series executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman during today’s virtual global First Contact Day panels.
