Star Trek: Voyager wrapped production 20 years ago

On May 23, 2001, the credits rolled on the final episode of Star Trek: Voyager, bringing an end to seven wonderful seasons of a ground-breaking show for the franchise. Many fans wanted a different resolution to the series as they wanted to see the crew actually landing on Earth. So it was a bittersweet wrap-up for the characters we’d gotten to know so well—Captain Kathryn Janeway, Commander Chakotay, Tuvok, Lt. Tom Paris, Ensign Harry Kim, Neelix, Kes, Seven of Nine, Lt. B’Ellana Torres, and The Doctor.

Voyager has found new fans with the availability of streaming, and its popularity continues to grow, as evidenced by the record-breaking results of the recent Indiegogo campaign to create a documentary. Fans flocked to contribute, eager to see more and learn more about these actors who will always be the characters they inhabited aboard Voyager.

Voyager has been kept alive by the actors and the fans

Fortunately, those of us who loved the series haven’t left it behind. Star Trek conventions have brought us up close with the actors for autographs and pictures. Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill reignited the excitement in the series with their ongoing podcast, Delta Flyers, on which they rewatch and discuss an individual episode each week, providing behind-the-scenes details and anecdotes about the production and the cast.

And one of the most exciting moments for Voyager fans was learning that Kate Mulgrew would reprise her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway on the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. It certainly won’t be the same as seeing her with the rest of the crew as they navigated through the Delta Quadrant, but we’re still happy to have the character’s return.

While we eagerly await the finished product of the documentary, To the Journey, Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager, we will watch all seven seasons again….and again because this is one series that will never be shelved. Fans will see to that.
