A favorite classic song sung in Klingon

Composed in 1939 for The Wizard of Oz and sung by Judy Garland, Somewhere Over the Rainbow always brings back memories of Dorothy and her dog. The last thing you would think about when hearing the song is a Klingon. The Wizard and Oz and Star Trek don’t exactly go together, but that didn’t hinder The Klingon Pop Warrior jenbom from creating her own rendition of the classic song. And as her Youtube channel name suggests, she sang it in Klingon to the delight of Star Trek fans, with guitar accompaniment by an unidentified Starfleet officer.

This isn’t the first classic song jenbom has tackled as fans can see on her channel. The songstress also crooned Celine Dion’s “The Heart Will Go On” in perfect Klingon. But she doesn’t have an issue with covering more popular songs, either, as you can hear in her version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

According to jenbom’s website, klingonpopwarrior.com, “Commander jenbom sutai-toQqul (Jen Usellis) and her guitar slinging Red Shirt (Joe Mizzi) travel to bring the best Klingon pop and rock to your ears.”  According to her bio, one song for a Star Trek podcast turned into a viral music video. Since then, she has created two EPs and numerous live performances.

While “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” isn’t something you’d hear Worf or his friends sing while sloshing back some blood wine, it’s well-done in this instance. Clearly, jenbom has done her homework in learning one of the toughest languages in the Star Trek universe. And to be able to put those type of words to song is impressive.
