Fans of Star Trek: The Motion Picture will get a fully restored 4k version soon.

Physical media isn’t going away, and if anything, more and more people are looking to re-release films and albums for fans who want a higher quality version of the thing they enjoy. Modern artists are actually making records again due to the clamoring from collectors and movies are very much the same way. So it’s no real surprise that the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is getting a full-on 4k, a restoration that will take around 6-8 months to do.

Now no physical release has been announced, but it seems only a matter of time before it is.

From Star Trek.com;

"The restoration will be undertaken by producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise.The film will be prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. The restoration is expected to take 6-8 months and will launch with an exclusive window on Paramount+."

Not the only Star Trek film news for collectors

If you’re a fan of Star Trek and the films, there’s even more news for collectors. To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the series, Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment are working o a new collection that will debut on September 7, 2021. One day prior to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek’s debut on television back in 1966.

Each of the first four films; The Motion Picture, the Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock and The Voyage Home will be available for purchase in a unique box-set. Each film will come in 4K Ultra HD and BluRay, with tons of bonuses. You will even be able to access digital copies of the original theatrical version for each film.

There will also be commentary, isolated scores, deleted scenes, storyboards, trailers and so much more.  If the obviously large price tag is too much, the four films also will be available individually on BluRay.

The original series is also going to be released on BluRay as well.
