Section 31 isn’t on the backburner

Not much has been said about Section 31, the series about the clandestine intelligence arm of Starfleet (or the rogue organization, depending on which century you’re in), starring Michelle Yeoh, lately. Most of the focus has been on Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks. And, of course, Strange New Worlds is the Star Trek series that’s really on everyone’s radar because so much is being said about it, with its final episode wrapping recently. We know that its debut isn’t far away. The same can’t be said for Section 31.

Unsurprisingly, though, the silence behind the series has a lot to do with the pandemic. According to Alex Kurtzman, who participated in the Producers Guild of America panel with the executive producers behind Discovery, Section 31 is plugging along and making “great tracks.” Kurtzman even confirmed that producers had a couple of scripts in hand.

Alex Kurtzman discussed Section 31 on a recent panel

During the panel, Kurtzman said Section 31 was on a “very specific schedule that then got completely thrown out of whack because of covid.” He went on to say that other series had been affected and had to be pushed back , with Discovery starting many months later than what they had on their schedule as well as Star Trek: PIcard. So Section 31 wasn’t the only series that got put on a tenuous hold. That said, Kurtzman added that they’re on a great track with Section 31, saying he was very optimistic about it.

This will come as a relief for fans who were thinking the series had slipped away quietly. Many are looking forward to exploring the underside of Starfleet, especially those who remember Luther Sloan from Deep Space Nine. Sloan introduced the organization that had no oversight or authority, even trying to recruit Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) to join the agency. He was portrayed by William Sadler who gave the agent just the right amount of suspicion and ego. Of course we wonder if all the agent will have that same kind of hubris.

With Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets focused on bettering the galaxy and creating a future where harmony abounds, it’ll be interesting to slip behind the curtain to see the organization that will kill without impunity supposedly in an effort to protect Starfleet’s interests.
