Star Trek: Lower Decks has revealed a Voyager cameo in its season two trailer.

The new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is coming soon and a trailer has just been released for the upcoming season. The new season is set for a return on August 12, 2021, and will see a host of aliens return to the franchise including the Ferengi and everyone’s favorite gibberish-speaking alien race The Children of Tama. In fact, one of them seems to be a recurring character, for at least one episode. The big news for long-time fans of the franchise or just fans who have gotten into the older content is that a Voyager alumnus is returning to the franchise.

Robert Duncan McNeill, who played Tom Paris on Star Trek: Voyager will return to the role in voice form, bringing Paris to life for season two on Lower Decks. It appears to be just a cameo but it’s a welcomed one, especially after reports came out from McNeill himself that he was up for a role in Picard as Paris but couldn’t do it due to filming Turner and Hooch for Disney+.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has several surprises in its season two trailer

It was great to see The Children of Tama, Tom Paris, and a whole heap of Nausicaans pop up in the trailer for Lower Deck’s second season but what was most surprising wasn’t what he saw, but what we heard. The second season trailer seemed to have much better writing than the first, though that is admittedly just an opinion.

The gag of the Children of Tama Starfleet lieutenant joining got a laugh out of me. Then there was the bit where Boimler (Jack Quaid) was screaming and caught in the two locations at once as the teleporter malfunctioned. That was too dang good. Of course, Boimler talking to a Tom Paris plate while hallucinating? Brilliant.

That doesn’t mean every joke landed but the first trailer got zero laughs out of me, while the second season did a much-improved job.
