Gates McFadden would take over Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Picard could add a captain
Star Trek: Picard tells the story of Jean-Luc Picard’s life after he left Starfleet, and up until season one debuted, he had just been living his life on his vineyard. Of course, viewers needed to see more than just a former Admiral puttering around amongst grapes so the action and adventure began. And the series got renewed for seasons two and three, with season two set to be released next year. After that, we’ll get a third season as it was being filmed simultaneously with the second. But we don’t know how much longer Patrick Stewart will play Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, although there have been rumors about more seasons of the series. Should Stewart desire to leave this role behind for good, though, Gates McFadden told Inverse she would happily slip into the role of Captain Picard.
And before you think that could never happen because she isn’t Captain Picard, there are ways around that. Technically, McFadden was the captain in a future timeline as we saw in “All Good Things,” the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation. So if the series were adjusted, this could be made to work. Or, in the alternative, Dr. Beverly Crusher could marry Jean-Luc before he wrapped his time on the series, thereby giving her his last name.
McFadden thinks it would be fun to be on Star Trek: Picard
Though McFadden admitted in the interview that nothing was happening right now, she also said that it would be “so much fun to do something on it,” meaning the show.
"Now, I know you’ve been asked about Season 2 of Picard a million times. But. I will say, you did play a Captain Picard, in name and in title. Could you just take over the show if Sir Patrick quit?Well from your mouth to God. That would be great. [Laughs.] I mean, who knows. It would be so much fun to do something on it [Picard]. We’ll see. Nothing is happening now."
That would certainly be a change in the direction, one which would bring another woman to the forefront of a Star Trek series. There are so many ways this show could go if McFadden were to accept the role as the new Picard of Star Trek: Picard. With her as both a doctor and a captain, possibly still in Starfleet, the stories would practically write themselves as there has never been a female captain who is also a doctor. And these would be stories I would definitely love to see!
