September 7th heralds the arrival of Captain Kirk in 4k

To celebrate the 55th anniversary of Star Trek, the first four films that included the cast of The Original Series will release on September 7th remastered in brand-new 4k UHD. The special film package will also include an isolated score track for The Motion Picture. To promote the release of these four movies, William Shatner shared some of this thoughts about Star Trek with Paramount Movies as well as his thoughts about Captain Kirk which will probably come as no surprise.

What makes Shatner’s Captain Kirk so complex?

In the promo, Shatner talks about how there is nothing like Star Trek in show business and that he doesn’t understand this phenomenon. No one fully understands why Star Trek is as popular as it is except to say that fans love it, and those who don’t love it, don’t understand why we do. One thing Shatner does understand, though, and that is the many layers of Captain Kirk, who, according to Shatner is as complex as he is.

"“The great science fiction story is human, and human beings offer this large arc of behavior, and I’d like to think that’s me and that’s Captain Kirk.”"

Captain Kirk wasn’t a simple man as we all know. He’d adhere to the Prime Directive or ignore it, depending on the particular set of circumstances. He never met a rule he wouldn’t bend or break, and we all know how he felt about no-win scenarios. But he was also dedicated to a fault, loyal, determined, and a force to be reckoned with when crossed.

All of those traits added up to a captain that crew members would follow into hell and back. They helped him steal the Enterprise, stuffed Starfleet members in closets, and disabled Starfleet’s newest pride and joy because they knew Kirk needed them. They risked their own careers to save him. People that love Captain Kirk, love him with a passion, and those who hate him, do so with equal enmity. It’s all because of those many layers that made him one of Starfleet’s greatest captains.
