Jonathan Frakes thought Star Trek: The Next Generation had more stories

Star Trek: The Next Generation wrapped after seven seasons in 1994, ending an iconic series that had reignited the franchise and brought in more fans to the community. And very few of those fans were ready for TNG to come to an end because, honestly, we didn’t want to say goodbye to Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. There were still so many things we wanted to see, and according to an interview with TrekMovie, series star Jonathan Frakes thought the series had more stories left in it.

In the interview with Anthony Pascale, Frakes said that he and Marina Sirtis would still be doing the show if they had been asked. He believed TNG ended as a series so Paramount could make movies in the franchise, but he wasn’t convinced the series finale “All Good Things” was the end of what viewers could have seen aboard the Enterprise.

Jonathan Frakes said the series had more seasons

The longest-running live-action drama series today is Law and Order: SVU, which has been on the air now for 22 seasons. Could The Next Generation have gone that long? Frakes isn’t sure the series had as many seasons in it, but he believed there was more that could have been done. And fans would agree as even the movies didn’t wrap up storylines or character arcs. And we wanted to know more about what happened to the characters.

Though we’re learning more about Captain Picard (now Admiral) and his life after the Enterprise in Star Trek: Picard, some stories have been left open-ended. And though we know these characters won’t return to The Next Generation, we’re still interested in what became of them. Picard has filled us in on Riker and Troi, and we know about Data, but we would love the chance to learn more about Geordi La Forge, Dr. Crusher, and Worf. Perhaps they’ll turn up on Picard in the future, and we’ll get an update on their lives.
