Star Trek: Voyager left a plot point dangling

The relationship between the Talaxian, Neelix, and his Ocampa girlfriend, Kes, was never a popular one on Star Trek: Voyager.  He was older than she was, and their romance didn’t come across as realistic to some. In Ocampan age, Kes was only two years old so she still had a lot of learning to do. Eventually, their relationship fizzled out, and viewers weren’t shown what had happened between the two of them.

When guesting on The Delta Flyers podcast with Tim Russ, Ethan Phillips, who portrayed Neelix for all seven seasons, said a break-up scene between his character and Kes’ had actually been filmed. For reasons unknown to him, the scene was never aired.

Ethan Phillips described the scene that Star Trek: Voyager left out

Phillips called the scene, which was transcribed by TrekMovie, “beautifully written” and a “nice tag to the relationship.” The scene took place in the science lab, and Neelix and Kes both acknowledge they weren’t a couple anymore. Phillips said it was a “closure conversation” that Voyager never aired.

Kes left Voyager in the early part of Season Four while Neelix remained with the crew until the final season, leaving in “Homestead,” the 22nd episode of season seven after deciding to stay with a group of Talaxians on an asteroid. He falls in love with Dexa, who has a son, Brax, and Captain Janeway gives him an out by suggesting they needed an Official Starfleet Ambassador to the Delta Quadrant.

Last year, Ethan Phillips told Startrek.com that Neelix would still be with Dexa and Brax, and they would have had at least seven more sons. Being that the character has remained in the Delta Quadrant, this opens the door for Neelix to potentially show up in Kate Mulgrew’s upcoming series, Star Trek: Prodigy. With the animated series set in the Delta Quadrant, and the juvenile crew that will need lots of direction, Neelix could be useful to Captain Janeway’s Emergency Training Hologram.

Next. Star Trek: Prodigy is in the same universe as the rest of the Nu Trek shows. dark
