Captain Janeway returns in Star Trek: Prodigy

When Kate Mulgrew was cast in the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, she broke new ground for the franchise. Portraying the first woman in command of a Federation starship as well as the lead of a new series could only be described as a daunting task. But Mulgrew pulled it off quite efficiently, and Captain Janeway has gone on to become one of the most iconic captains in Star Trek history which is why her return in Star Trek: Prodigy is something most all fans are looking forward to.

Alex Kurztman, who is the executive producer of Prodigy, confirmed to Comicbook.com that Janeway’s path wasn’t easy when she had her time at the helm, but that she held her own. And it’s one of the reasons they wanted to bring her back to the franchise.

"“Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters, but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”"

Kate Mulgrew sets Star Trek: Prodigy up to be a success

Though Voyager might not be the favorite out of all the Star Trek series, it maintained steady ratings and ran for seven seasons. Unsurprisingly, Mulgrew’s portrayal of the capable, determined, and unrelenting captain helped drive the series to a successful run so bringing her back aboard another Star Trek series makes good, creative sense. The president of Nickelodeon Animation, Ramsey Naito agrees.

"“Kate’s portrayal of Captain Janeway is truly iconic, and has resonated with a global audience for many years,. We can’t wait to see her bring this character to life in a whole new way, while continuing to be an inspiration for both new and loyal fans.”"

Star Trek: Prodigy is a series geared toward a younger audience, but, undoubtedly, fans of Star Trek: Voyager will be tuning in solely to enjoy spending time with Captain Janeway again…even though she’ll only be a hologram.
