Strange New Worlds’ Anson Mount wants to play a different superhero

When Green Lantern debuted in theaters, it didn’t exactly make a big splash. It redeemed itself when it released on Netflix and became one of the most streamed films, according to Comic Book. But the director, Martin Campbell, told Screenrant that he never should have made the film. The comedy just didn’t sit well with viewers, and now, HBO Max is developing a Green Lantern TV series with Finn Wittrock with less focus on Hal Jordan, but there’s no indication of whether comedy will play a role. Anson Mount, who is playing Captain Pike on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, told Screenrant that he has always wondered why the film was a comedy.

Mount said that Green Lantern’s story is darker, and the actor knows a little something about playing darker superheroes as he’s voicing Batman in DC’s Injustice movie which is based upon the video game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, which is brutal and extremely violent.

Anson Mount was asked which DC character he’d like to play

The actor didn’t hesitate when asked which DC character he’d like to play after voicing Batman. Green Lantern would be his first choice, although, since the movie has already been done, he said he wasn’t sure he’d get to do that.

"“Well, they already did Green Lantern so I’m not sure I’m gonna get to do that. But I have always marveled at why — that project was in development for so long and I did always wonder why it was assumed that it should be a comedy. I’m not sure not I quite get that, it’s a much more robust, at times darker, story than that.”"

With the new series coming from HBO Max, it’s unlikely a new Green Lantern movie will be even discussed anytime soon; however, if DC does decide to reboot the film, perhaps they should listen to Mount and choose a grittier path to go down. And call the actor for the lead role as he’s already proven he knows how to portray drama.
