Major Kira and Gul Dukat were enemies, but writers wanted more

In the realm of bad ideas, this has to be one of the worst ones from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writers. Major Kira (Nana Visitor) had suffered extensively at the hands of Gul Dukat (Marc Alamo), the Cardassian military officer who was the Prefect of Bajor. He became one of the most hated individuals among Bajorans, rightfully so. And the animosity between KIra and Dukat was well-written and deserved. But writers didn’t want to keep the relationship the way it was. In fact, they wanted to move it in a very wrong direction.

In the Deep Space Nine documentary, What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Visitor discussed her anger with the writers when they had the idea to create a romance between Kira and Gul Dukat. When asked about why she got so angry, Visitor told Comicbook.com that the idea was unspeakable and unthinkable.

Gul Dukat represented the worst of war criminals to Major Kira

How the writers could have even considered a romance between these two characters is unfathomable. Dukat forced Kira’s mother into a relationship, and she was supposed to become involved with him, too? Not only did this not make sense, but the very thought was untenable as Visitor explained.

"We can go through the horrendous war criminals in every part of the world. Just name the one that chills you to the bone, that’s who Gul Dukat was to me. He wasn’t someone who was just carrying out orders, because his family was in danger or whatever. I couldn’t work my head around anything other than these were his hard and fast beliefs that another sentient being was below, was less than him. To find a love relationship, or a physical relationship, with him was unspeakable and unthinkable to me. I think that Damar and Kira towards Season Seven could have gotten involved. That would have been something different, but not Gul Dukat. Never him."

Though Visitor thinks Damar and Kira could have gotten involved, most fans would have had a hard time believing that she could have allowed herself to have gotten that close to a Cardassian. Maybe years down the road it would have been a possibility, but not when the wounds were still too fresh. Even then, a relationship with Damar would have been questionable.

What do you think? Would a relationship between Major Kira and Damar have worked?
