Camille Saviola who played Kai Opaka has passed away

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has lost another memorable character, and the Star Trek fandom a beloved actress as Camille Saviola has died. Before Louise Fletcher came aboard Deep Space Nine as Kai Winn, Saviola portrayed the role of the spiritual leader of Bajor. Known as Kai Opaka, Saviola’s character had the respect and devotion of most Bajorans, including Major Kira, unlike Kai Winn. And although Saviola only appeared in four episodes on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, she remained a memorable character throughout the show’s history.

The Broadway star made the most of those four episodes on which she guest-starred as the Bajoran leader. With heart and warmth, she set the bar high, making Louise Fletcher’s Kai Winn, who had a distinctly different, more jarring personality, immediately suspect. And making today’s news a heartbreaking way to end a week as WarpFactorTrek.com announced the actress’ passing on Twitter today. People.com shared the news as well, saying the actress’ passing was confirmed by friends and colleagues on social media.

Star Trek fans and colleagues are honoring Camille Saviola with heartfelt tributes

Tributes have been pouring in from fans and colleagues of the 71-year-old actress. Some are posting their goodbyes to Saviola by saying she has gone to be with the Prophets and others saying this was the will of the Prophets.

Star Trek: Discovery star Wilson Cruz took to Twitter to express his emotions over the actress’ passing.

And actor Harvey Fierstein shared a wonderful picture of himself with the actress, calling her the “the Italian Godmother of Soul.”

As Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and all Star Trek fans continue to bid farewell to Saviola, we extend our deepest condolences to the actress’ friends, family, and colleagues. May she rest in peace.
