10. “Macrocosm” – Star Trek: Voyager
Kathryne Janeway was involved in one of the scariest situations imaginable; going to make first contact with only Neelix for company. A horrifying premise on its own, I’m sure, but this isn’t about Neelix. No, this is about Star Trek doing their own version of Alien.
Janeway and Neelix return to the ship to find everyone out of commission and with large growths protruding from their skin. It’s revealed that a virus has grown from and is now the size of a small animal. The virus got on board through a mishap involving the teleporters and an adjacent system. Because of this, the virus is able to infect the gel packs that are used in the ship, releasing the virus.
Now the ship has to deal with a virus that grows in size each time it feeds on people. With the crew of the Voyager down and out and just Janeway left standing, she pulls her best Ellen Ripley impersonation and attempts to track down the alien virus that is hurting her crew.
Being locked alone in a ship, with no help coming and a deadly virus hunting you down is a pure horror at its best. Too bad the routine nature of a series like Star Trek really nerfs a lot of the tension.
